Match Reports

Bedok 2nds/3rds 15    Wanderers 2nds/3rds 12
As part of our preparations towards the new season, a Bedok combined 2nds/3rds faced Wanderers under the hot and blistering heat at 1pm. Captain by Qing, the team also welcomed debuts for Sidney Kumar, Rex Wang, Kevin Pinto, Kew, Yi Seng and Dexter Wong.

The larger Wanderers pack dominated possession in the tight but our boys managed to score a breakaway try early in the middle of the first half. Wanderers managed to claw back in the game with 2 tries later on to lead 12-5 in the middle of the 2nd half. In seemed that Wanderers looked to have wrapped the game up as they tightened up their play denying us with any possession. But nevertheless, the determination of the boys was evident as they scored two breakway tries in the last 10 minutes of the game to close out at 15-12.

A good experience for our youngsters, some who have never played a rugby game in their life. A big thanks to Rhys and the Wanderers on agreeing with the friendly on such a late notice and a big pat on the back for Wanderers as they battled hard with just 2 players on the bench. With one more repeat friendly against Wanderers in 2 weeks time, the boys should be raring as slots are up for grabs in all 3 grades.

Bedok 1sts 17 Bucks 1sts 12 (12-12 before extra time)

Despite having only 20-30% possession, our boys played extremely well by making good use of the ball. Bedok let in 2 relatively soft tries through defensive lapses but battled back with 3 penalties by John Forrester and 1 by Greg McDonald. We were unlucky not to finish off the game as we missed 3 penalties on the trot against a resolute Bucks.

There was a bit of confusion at fulltime as both teams had different thoughts on the outcome, Bucks had thought it was over as they had the impression that whoever scores first wins the game at fulltime, while we thought it was sudden death extra time. Both were wrong as the game was going to be 2 x 10 minute periods of extra time with another 10 minutes period of sudden death and finally penalty kicks!

In the middle of the first period, substitute hooker Gaspar Tan burst through a half gap 20 metres out to score at the corner in what would be the winning try of the match. However, there was no immediate celebration as Bucks pounded the Bedok line in the last 5 minutes of the last period of extra time.

Despite being down to 14 men, the boys threw everything including the kitchen sink in to deny Bucks a try to close the game out at 17-12 winners.

A heartstopping match indeed and fair play to Bucks who battled hard over the 100 minutes and were a more than worthy test for our pre season preparations. Our boys play SCC next this coming Saturday on the 23rd of October and we'll need as much support as possible to cheer the boys on.

Come on down to support the guys as they compete for the first silverware of the season!
