BK Youth Rugby
In the same year Bedok Kings started, 1996, a recruitment drive was done in the eastern region of Singapore to attract the young to the newest rugby club in town.
At that time the Standard Chartered National Rugby Youth League was established and this has competitions in the Under 12, Under 14, Under 17 and Under 20 age groups. The SRU Eastern Regional Development officers, Adin Ng and Ridzal Saat went on their way to recruit the young players to fill the Bedok Kings ranks and build the future squad of winners. Player recruitment focused mostly on the Bedok and Tampines Areas.
The support of Japanese Community, namely BK legends Mr Kobayashi, Mr Kondo, Mr Onishi, and Mr Furukawa ensured that the Bedok Kings Youth were the only teams which had sponsored jerseys in Singapore. ANA, Asahi Shimbun, JAL and OCS were imprinted on the famous jerseys. Future companies that came on board to sponsor the youth teams itself were Yokogawa and Canon.
On the field itself, the young kings (or princes) were culled from schools which included Damai, Bedok North, Bedok Town, Bedok View, Min Xin and Springfield to name a few. It helped that the SRU development officers coaching these schools were also playing for the Kings.
Players who have helped in the development of the sport included Terry Hassler, Matthew Chichero, Adam Jorgenson who were down on Saturdays and Sunday mornings to help train the boys.
Under 12 Champions
In 1998, the Bedok Kings Under 12 team won the only Standard Chartered National Rugby Youth League. It was a pulsating final with the Under 12 Kings scoring 5 tries to 4 against our perennial rivals Blacks.
In 1999 the BK Under 14 and Under 12 team made it to the Standard Chartered National Rugby Youth League semi-finals, narrowly missing final appearances. The boys are keen and with the revamping of the youth league this year, we expect a lot of the young kings as they represent the Singapore eastern region, in the name of Bedok Kings.
